The Kohler M18 engine is a horizontal shaft 2 cylinder engine. It is a very useful engine to drive outdoor gear such as hydraulic log splitters, agricultural pumps or generators. Wherever you need a source of power, this engine can be adapted. Kohler understands its engines well and provides an extensive service manual that includes all the specifications for the engine.

General Specifications

  • Kolher states that the engine produces 18 horsepower, and it has a displacement of 42.18 cubic inches. Kohler further stated that the engine’s bore is 3.12 inches, and its stroke is 2.75 inches. The bore is the diameter of the piston. The stroke is how far the piston travels in the cylinder. The engine weighs approximately 130 pounds. (See Reference 1)

Torque Specifications

  • For the connecting rods, Kohler specifies 140-inch pounds for new nuts and 100-inch pounds for re-used nuts. For the intake and exhaust manifold bolts, the torque is 150-inch pounds. The crankcase bolts have two different sizes. For a 5/16-inch bolt, the torque is 200-inch pounds. For a 3/8-inch bolt, the torque is 260-inch pounds. (See reference 1)

Size

  • Kohler specifies the outside dimensions of the engine. The overall width is 17.89 inches. The overall height is 17.39 inches and the depth is 13.39 inches. (See reference 1) These measurements are useful if you are designing a piece of equipment. For example, you may be designing a generator with an outside safety cage. Using these measurements, you will be able to design the cage with enough clearance so no part of the engine rubs or touches the framework.

Crankshaft Specifications

  • The crankshaft diameter is 1.125 inches, or 1-1/8 inches. It protrudes from the engine 4.44 inches (See reference 1). These are also useful measurements. If you are trying to determine a pulley shaft hole diameter, or if you are setting the distance from the engine to the driven equipment, use these measurements as a guideline.
