Compared to the first-generation Silhouette’s styling, the 1997-through-2004 models offered easier-on-the-eyes styling, and a serious list of family oriented options. Despite the thoughtful changes made to the later models, the Silhouette, along with its U-body cousins, failed to dominate the minivan market. However, compared to some of its rivals, the amount of engine compartment space is more abundant and inviting to the do-it-yourself owner, making the task of replacing one of the idler pulleys an easy proposition.

Open the Silhouette’s hood and allow the engine to cool. Locate the belt routing diagram, affixed to the serpentine belt cover, below the power steering pump. If the sticker is missing or illegible, draw a diagram of the belt routing or take a reference photo. Rotate the bottom belt tensioner – mounted directly below the alternator – counterclockwise, using a 3/8-inch breaker bar, to release the tension from the belt.

While holding the breaker bar with one hand, slip the belt from the idler pulley you intend to replace; one idler is positioned to the lower right of the alternator, while the other is mounted just above the AC compressor and crankshaft pulley. Slowly rotate the tensioner clockwise, to its resting state.

Remove the single bolt that secures the idler pulley to the engine, using a socket and ratchet. Remove the pulley from the engine. Insert the original mounting bolt through the replacement pulley, then thread the mounting bolt into the idler pulley’s mounting provision on the engine. Tighten the mounting bolt to 37 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench.

Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and hold it in position, then route the serpentine belt according to the diagram on the belt cover or your own diagram. Once the belt is routed, release the tensioner slowly and remove the breaker bar. Double-check the belt routing and ensure it is aligned within the accessory pulley grooves. Start the engine and re-check the serpentine belt for correct operation.
