The word Camry is a phonetic interpretation of the Japanese word "kanmuri," which translates as "crown" in English. Toyota has had a long tradition of naming its mass-market models "crown" in different languages, starting with the Camry’s direct predecessor, the Toyota Crown, and continuing through the Corona and Corolla. The Camry, though, certainly has earned its crown as Toyota’s sales king, and likely will keep the title for some time to come.

Fluid Capacities

  • The four-cylinder Camry requires 3.8 quarts of 5W-30 synthetic oil with a filter change, and the V-6 engine takes 5.0 quarts. All transmissions use Dextron II fluid; the four-cylinder manual takes 2.3 quarts, and the auto gets 2.6 quarts. The V-6 manual takes 4.9 quarts, and the automatic gets 2.6 quarts. The four-cylinder’s cooling system holds 7.3 quarts, and the V-6 engine holds 9.6 quarts. Under normal operating conditions, Toyota recommends changing the engine oil every 5,000 miles, flushing the coolant every 100,000, and doesn’t give an interval on changing the transmission fluid. But doing a drain-and-fill every 40,000 miles is good practice. For severe duty — lots of start-and-stop traffic, short trips, high or low operating temperatures — cut the oil change interval down to 3,000 miles.
