Hitting an animal while driving your vehicle can be traumatic. Hitting a skunk while driving can be both traumatic and smelly. The smell makes its way into the interior of your car and might linger for weeks. Skunk odor can usually be removed if treated within a few hours of the spraying.

Things You’ll Need

  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Baking soda
  • Dish liquid
  • Bowl
  • Clean cloth
  • Water hose
  • Plastic container
  • Charcoal
  • Mix 1 qt. hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 tsp. of dish liquid in a bowl. Dip a clean cloth in the neutralizing solution. Gently scrub the interior surfaces of your car. Do not saturate the carpets or upholstery.

  • Rinse the carpet and upholstery with water. Press a clean cloth into the carpet and upholstery to dry it. A carpet cleaning machine might be used to extract the water.

  • Spray tires and other exterior areas of your car with a water hose. Water rinses away the neutralizing solution.

  • Cut a few small holes in the lid of a plastic container. Place five pieces of charcoal in the container, and leave it in the back of your car for a few weeks. The charcoal will absorb lingering odors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hydrogen peroxide might remove or fade color from your carpet and upholstery. Test a small, hidden area with the neutralizer before applying to the entire area.
