A bad starter will not turn, or have too little power to actually start the engine. Replacing the starter in a 2001 Chrysler Sebring is a simple process–the starter can be reached from above, unlike in many cars, including older models of the Sebring. A replacement starter can be purchased or ordered from most auto-parts stores. Expect to spend about half an hour replacing your starter.
Things You’ll Need
- Socket wrench
- Socket set, metric
- Pliers
- Torque wrench
-
Disconnect the negative (black) cable from the battery, then the red.
-
Remove the air cleaner assembly. It is the large plastic assembly on the right side of the engine connected to a large hose. It is held in place by several bolts. Remove the hose by squeezing the tabs on the hose clamp with a pair of pliers and sliding the hose off.
-
Disconnect the electrical connectors from the starter. The starter can be identified by the very large electrical lines that supply the power and must be unscrewed to remove.
-
Unbolt the starter from the engine block and pull it out of the compartment.
-
Replace the starter, torquing the bolts to 21 to 25 ft-lbs. Replace the electrical connectors and torque them to 36 to 52 in-lbs. (3 to 4.25 ft-lbs.). Install the air cleaner assembly and reconnect the battery.
Tips & Warnings
- If your Sebring has the 2.4L engine, you may need to remove a cover to reach the starter after removing the air cleaner assembly.
- The hose on the air cleaner is easier to work with when the assembly is unbolted.
